Meet Westerly, Age 15

New Family Home Donated by Drexel’s Berlin Team

Westerly, age 15, lived in an orphanage for eight years. Westerley’s parents are divorced and have a total of four children. Westerley’s mother and her new spouse are both illiterate, and together they do not generate enough income to support the children. Her mother sells sugar cane at the local market in their hometown of Port Salut (an hour south of Les Cayes). Her stepfather raises hens and sells at the local market. The children’s biological father does not provide any support for the family.

In addition to the new home that is being sponsored by Drexel’s Berlin location, Westerly’s family will participate in resiliency support programs from Overture International, including:

  • Education support for Westerly and her sister
  • A Young Adult Empowerment Program
  • Nutrition support through animal expansion
  • Counseling and economic coaching
